IN SOMALIA
Lack of

Global Significance
It’s like making something for centuries and centuries and developing it over generations and generations, then all the work is gone to waste. That is exactly what we are fearful of to happen to the Somali population. A generation of Somalis could be close to worthless if this lack of education continues. Also, none of them will grow up to have a stable and happy life, this is a residue of having no knowledge. For a good job, that offers satisfactory salaries, a quality education is required in most cases. At the moment, Somalia is using other countries as their support and money distributor, and at some point, this may come to an end, as these countries may be obligated to keep this money. Education brings much more than knowledge, it brings life skills. With all kids and teenagers having an education, there will be fewer terrorists, pirates, and people who commit their lives to criminal activity. Countries such as Somalia and South Sudan, are among the countries with large numbers out-of-school due to the impact of conflict. Somalia has been devastated by decades of conflict, and as a result, they have reached the bottom of world rankings for illiteracy rates, with a staggering rate of 70% of people being illiterate. In fact, 93 percent of Somali children do not even complete primary education. In addition, Somalia has one of the world’s lowest school enrollment rates, which shows how many people have either given up on school or, cannot afford it. Eritrea and Ethiopia are also in the bottom five countries, marking a worrying trend in the Horn of Africa. DR Congo –another country affected by war and lack of governance has seen declining school enrolment rates. Maryam Qasim of the Education Ministry expressed the effect of education when she says, “Education would keep children from becoming al-Shabab militants.” If the Al Shabab group keeps getting larger and larger, they could unequivocally go global and affect the whole planet. Al-Shabaab recruiters offer $50 to families in exchange for their sons to join the group. Families have no other option but to accept the offer because they are poor. Differently, At least 70 percent of Somalia’s population is under the age of 30 – yet youth unemployment in Somalia is among the highest in the world, at 67 percent. Finally, Somalia is third to last in world rankings for their education, which exemplifies the solemnity of their situation.
Globally, Somali pirates account for 18 billion dollars of loss for the global economy. Most, if not all, Somali pirates are uneducated people that carry out criminal activity to earn money. A very famous example would be the hijacking of the Maersk Alabama in 2009. On this ship was Mr. Richard Phillips, the captain of the ship, along with the other main character, Mike Perry, the chief engineer. Initially, the ship was heading through the Indian Ocean to reach its destination, to deliver its designated containers. But, 440 kilometers off the coast of Southeast Somalia, the hijacking took place. The pirates kept following the vessel until they got on, and of course demanded money, they wanted 5 million dollars. Eventually, they managed to take the captain off the ship and keep him hostage. The U.S navy and other helpers saved him. In fact, just that week, the Maersk was the sixth vessel in a week to be attacked by pirates who had previously extorted ransoms in the tens of millions of dollars. These people are normally uneducated and join terrorist groups or criminal groups to make money while stealing or hijacking. With less education, people will think it’s their only choice to do this because they won’t be able to get jobs and live a decent life. Seeing this, we can say that the world will be more peaceful on the grounds that education is provided.
