Regional Significance

Without education, the region of Somalia will literally collapse. As well as this, more and more people will end up joining terrorist groups for the simple reason that they have not been educated to think before making the right decisions in life. For Somalia to develop as a country, education is essential and brutal for development. A major issue that Somalia is currently facing is poverty, without education this issue will not be solved. Studies show that poverty can drop by 12 percent if a low-income country such as Somalia can just read. As well as this, education is critical for sustainable economic growth. Sub-Saharan Africa has only a 78% enrollment rate in schools. Education is a human right meaning everyone should have the right to an education.

What education also accomplishes is it teaches people about peace. In times of conflict and crisis, children are forced out of school, which contributes to higher dropout rates and lower completion rates. Education can well be the catalyst that is missing to pull out Somalis out of the cycle of poverty.  Research proves that 48% of all Somali boys and 52% of girls aged 5-14 work full-time rather than go to school. That means that around half of the population of children in Somalia are forced to leave school and work for their families, and that is not to mention children who work part-time for their families afterschool. Somalia is in critical condition of becoming lawless, hostile and unpredictable ever since the collapse of its national government. Finally, if this Somali education situation does not improve, the region may be in big trouble. Rates of poverty and instability may rise, along with more criminal activity and death rates.

Unfortunately, half of the children in Somalia miss out on education, and if we do not fix this, it will regress. Nobody is going to be able to share their views. In fact, nothing will progress without education, "Education calls for a social transformation – it increases opportunities in life, can pull people out of poverty, empower women and drive economic growth. Understanding the barriers that prevent this happening is crucial.” Furthermore, an educated individual gets better earning opportunities. Professor Pauline Rose states, “Education is something that teaches life lessons, without education you won't be taught how to be a leader and instead they are going to just be a herd following everyone in circles. Education delivers creativity and makes individuals be more open minded." Believe it or not, but most people in Somalia don’t even know why they should take showers, or clean their hands, and why they should live a hygienic life.  Lack of education also causes lack of social awareness and interaction. Nowadays, only the elite individuals are able to keep up with high competitive job markets. Many people can not keep up and end up with very minimal amounts of money. This proves how important education actually is and that you live to learn. In school, they teach you many things that you’ll need in adulthood. School teaches you how to overcome problems and find the solution for them.
